‘shopping for clothes with women all my life’ Lubaina Himid

The creation of miniature artworks and collections has long fascinated both artists and collectors since the 17th century Cabinets of Curiosities. In the 20th century, Queen Mary’s Dolls House at Windsor Castle housed miniature works by Paul Nash, Glyn Philpot, William Nicholson and many others. Pallant House Gallery already had two model art galleries dating from 1934 and 2000, with original artworks by Paul Nash, Vanessa Bell, Richard Hamilton, RB Kitaj and Anthony Gormley.

In 2020, twenty contemporary artists were approached to create artworks for a new model art gallery, designed by architects Wright & Wright. The artists chosen reflected a wider diversity of background in the current art world. The miniature works were made during the lockdown due to Covid-19, and therefore reflected a practice which can be done at home, whilst studios were not accessible.
