Personal responses to the South Downs, in partnership with Outside In.

Four Outside In artists have taken part in an Outside In Step Up: Exploring Collections course at the gallery, creating personal responses to works related to the landscape and the South Downs in the collection.

Step Up: Exploring Collections is a training programme led by the award-winning arts charity Outside In which aims to provide participants with the skills to research and interpret works of art. In this iteration of the course, participants have been encouraged to explore the history behind works in the collection that represent the South Downs National Park or landscapes more generally and to produce their own creative interpretations.

The exhibition includes selection of these responses alongside works by Peter Iden, the Smith Brothers of Chichester and Simon Roberts.

Outside In supports artists who see themselves as facing significant barriers to the art world for reasons including health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. Founded at Pallant House Gallery in 2006 by director Marc Steene, Outside In became an independent charity in 2016 and now supports more than 2,500 artists.
