Recent Acquisition: Gerald Laing, Baby Baby Wild Things 1968

[ Exhibition )

Pop style arwork of a close up of Brigitte Bardot's face in black and white with a dusky pink 'O' encircling her face

Gerald Laing, ‘Brigitte Bardot’ from ‘Baby Baby Wild Things’, 1968, screenprint (1/6), Pallant House Gallery (Purchased with Support from The Art Fund and private donors, 2018) © The Estate of Gerald Laing, 2018.

An iconic portfolio of 60s pop art and glamour

Originally loaned to our 2018 exhibition POP! Art in a Changing Britain, Gerald Laing’s iconic print portfolio Baby Baby Wild Things (1968) has now been acquired for our collection with support from the Art Fund and the generosity of private donors.

Gerald Laing came to prominence in London in the early 1960s. His paintings of film stars, dragsters and other icons of popular culture place him as a central figure in British Pop Art.

Baby Baby Wild Things is an important acquisition for the gallery as it helps us to better tell the story of British Pop Art. Significantly, this is the only version in a British public collection.

The presence of the Brigitte Bardot print makes this a rare example of the portfolio as it was removed from almost all the portfolios and sold separately.
