Including artists ranging from Edward Bawden to Keith Vaughan, and David Hockney to Emily Young, The Dennis Andrews and Christopher Whelen Collection is the latest to join Pallant House Gallery’s collection through the support of Art Fund.
This Print Room exhibition brings together a selection of these works. From early gifts to the final bequest, the collection they left the Gallery comprises 70 artworks and rare books, reflecting a life spent living with art. Dennis Andrews (1924–2024) and his partner Christopher ‘Kit’ Whelen (1917–1993) built their collection gradually, guided by personal taste, friendship and curiosity.
Working in theatre and music, their connections with artists (including Edward Bawden) shaped what they acquired. From early illustrated books to later works on paper and sculpture, the collection brings together British and international artists, including Elizabeth Blackadder, Joan Miró and Ben Nicholson.
Presenting part of Pallant House Gallery’s wider ‘collection of collections’, this exhibition offers an insight into how individual passion and experience can shape a distinctive and deeply personal approach to collecting.
