Explore the sights and sounds of the Cornish coast in this fun, creative family workshop inspired by artist Alfred Wallis.

We will start by listening to an inspiring soundscape of crashing waves, seabirds and busy harbours.

Through looking at examples of Wallis’s work, participants will discover how he painted from memory and experience, using bold shapes and flattened spaces rather than traditional perspective.

Using simple cardboard templates, children will design and paint their own seaside picture onto a slate tile, taking inspiration from memories, imagination or pictures. They’ll experiment with shapes, colours and marks to create a unique piece of coastal art to take home!

This workshop is designed for families with children aged 7+. Parents and carers must remain with their children throughout the session.

Melissa Sharpe

Melissa Sharpe is an artist who explores what makes a house feel like home. She looks at everyday objects and tasks, thinking about how they can tell stories about our lives, feelings and experiences.

Melissa uses found objects and materials from old buildings, charity shops and homes to create her artwork. She takes things apart, layers them and puts them back together in new and surprising ways.

Her work explores how home can be a place of comfort and belonging, but can also change and bring feelings of sadness or uncertainty. By turning ordinary objects into art, Melissa invites us to look at the things around us in a new way.
