Join guest curator James Scott for an introductory talk on Alfred Wallis: An Artist’s Artist, an exhibition that explores the extraordinary life and legacy of fisherman-turned-artist Alfred Wallis.

Discover how this self-taught Cornish artist, who began painting in his 70s, left a profound mark on Modern British art through his evocative depictions of Cornwall’s harbours, fishing boats and coastlines, painted entirely from memory. His work earned the admiration of influential artists including Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Christopher Wood, Peter Lanyon and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. All were drawn to his innovative compositions, compressed perspectives, and expressive use of colour.

Through a collection of paintings and works by Alfred Wallis, many of which were collected by the artists who championed his talent, discover why he continues to be regarded as one of Britain’s most original artists. The exhibition explores his lasting influence on modernist approaches to perspective, form, colour and composition, while celebrating a body of work that remains uniquely distinctive and continues to inspire audiences today.

Your ticket includes entry to the exhibition following the talk.
