This exhibition displayed an exciting selection of recent acquisitions, including many works by contemporary artists.

Over the past 40 years we have built a collection of almost 5,000 paintings, sculptures and works on paper. It is the generosity of those who have made gifts or supported acquisitions that have made this possible.

New Works: Cultivating the Collection presented exciting recent highlights from a range of influential contemporary artists. This included drawings by Shirazeh Houshiary and Tony Cragg, prints by Lubaina Himid, Colin Self and Joe Tilson and sculptures by Helaine Blumenfeld and Eilis O’Connell. These works explored language and mythology, the relationship between art and architecture, and the treatment of light and space.

All of these works were on display at the Gallery for the first time (in 2022). Many of the works come from two major recent additions to the collection. Forty-five maquettes and preparatory drawings are from the Cass Sculpture Archive, acquired with support from Art Fund, John Booth and John Ayton MBE in 2019. The rest were part of a gift of 120 works on paper presented by Cristea Roberts Gallery in 2021. We were also generously gifted three of Colin Self’s Cinema Studies by Robin Vousden.
