Experience the first exhibition dedicated to Barbara Hepworth’s deep connection with Greece and the extraordinary impact it had on her art.
Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975) is one of Britain’s most celebrated artists, renowned for her pioneering abstract sculpture. Yet one of the defining influences on her work has remained largely unexplored. Barbara Hepworth and Greece reveals how a journey through Greece and its islands in 1954 renewed her artistic vision at a crucial point in her life.
Bringing together extracts from Hepworth’s diary from the trip alongside major sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints, the exhibition explores how the country’s radiant light, vibrant colours, dramatic landscapes, ancient architecture and elemental forces shaped her work.
Explore exceptional artworks, including Curved Form (Delphi) (1955), Hepworth’s Greek masterpiece, and Pierced Form (Santorin) (1963), which will be exhibited publicly for the first time.
Discover Barbara Hepworth’s little-known affinity with Greece and how it shaped her work for years to come.
