This event has passed.

Join artist Caron Penney for a two-day tapestry workshop designed for beginners to intermediate weavers.

You’ll explore the art of handwoven tapestry, inspired by the vibrant colours, forms, and techniques seen in John Piper’s The Piper Tapestry at Chichester Cathedral.

Course Highlights:

Guided Cathedral Tour
Start with an insightful tour of Chichester Cathedral to observe The Piper Tapestry. Caron Penney will highlight the strong colours, forms, and symbolism of the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water.

Hands-On Tapestry Workshop
Work from the Studio at Pallant House Gallery, where you’ll learn the essentials of tapestry weaving. Engage with techniques like colour blending, creating shapes, lines, and hatching—all techniques used in the Piper tapestry.

Weaving Techniques Covered:

  • Plain weave
  • Starting and ending threads
  • Using sheds
  • Colour blending
  • Form building
  • Hatching techniques

Learning and Activities
The workshop includes demonstrations, one-on-one advice, and supportive handouts from Caron. Participants will be encouraged to take notes on shapes and colours, and translate these observations into their own creative tapestries.

Final Outcome
By the end of the course, you’ll have created a small handwoven tapestry of your own design. Participants can purchase the weaving frame to continue their work at home. Leave with a unique tapestry and the skills to continue your weaving journey. The course also provides information on where to purchase tools and materials for future projects.

Whether you’re new to weaving or looking to develop your skills further, this workshop offers an immersive experience in the art of tapestry making.
