Life Drawing | A Gwen John Figure

£30 per workshop

[ Workshop )

This event has passed.

Unlock your artistic potential and get inspired by the life drawings of Gwen John with tutor Wendy Barratt.

In this series of workshops, we’ll delve into themes that explore the nude form and how women have reclaimed their autonomy in the depiction of the female nude. You’ll learn how to capture the elegant curves and lines of the human body, and create your own work that celebrates the human form.

Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced artist, you will come away with some fantastic new skills.

17 August – A Gwen John Figure

Our model will be clothed and posed in a style reminiscent of a traditional Gwen John sitter. Drawing exercises will be explored to study John’s style of portraiture, looking both at composition and the subtlety of closely related tones.

14 September – The Interior Self

Our model will be staged with objects and motifs pulled from Gwen John’s portraits and interiors. Within this we will explore how to environment around the sitter can inform the mood and narrative of the portrait.

Artist bio - Wendy Barratt

Wendy’s career as a graphic designer has been constantly fed by her passion for drawing and painting – in particular life drawing. Any spare time she has, is taken up with her own artistic endeavours as well as passing on her passion for drawing and painting to others through teaching.

Wendy is an artist who specialises in the genre of portraiture and the human figure. She has been working as a drawing and painting tutor in her spare time since 1997 – first in the south of France and then back in the UK – teaching both at Evolution arts and Draw Brighton. She now runs regular life drawing workshops in Worthing.

She has recently had work accepted into the Royal Society of Portrait Painters 2023 exhibition.

Commissions include large portraits which were used as major props for the ITV Crime Drama series The Long Call.
