Derek uses archival footage and interview extracts, alongside scenes from Jarman’s epoch-making films and actor Tilda Swinton’s open love letter to her late friend. These are poetically woven to create an intimate moving image portrait of one of Britain’s most radical filmmakers.
To Swinton’s melancholy voiceover and paced walk through the sites she shared with him, Julien contrasts Jarman’s joyous verve and spirited energy, progressively diminished by the illness that would claim his life. Derek ends with a short sequence of the achingly beautiful Blue, Jarman’s final work.
This screening is part of our new monthly series of Thursday Lates. Visitors are invited to enjoy our galleries and visit this season’s temporary exhibitions including Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists after hours. There will also be live music in the courtyard and drinks available from the Pallant Café to enjoy a beautiful summer evening.
This screening is part of our August Late event. By purchasing this film ticket you gain free access to our Galleries, exhibitions and drop-in activities from 5-8.30pm.
