This landmark exhibition explores how artists from the 18th to the 20th century have responded to the landscapes of the British Isles. Bringing together works by more than 60 artists, the exhibition reveals landscape not simply as scenery, but as a powerful expression of memory, identity and emotion.

From quiet lanes and chalk hills to industrial sites and abstract coastlines, painters, printmakers and sculptors have depicted places shaped by labour, conflict and imagination. British Landscapes: A Sense of Place invites visitors to reflect on how Britain’s landscapes have been lived in, remembered and reimagined – and how they continue to shape our collective sense of belonging and resilience.

This exhibition is Haroun Hayward’s first solo institutional show and showcases a new body of work.

Rooted in his experience studying the Sussex landscape, Hayward combines ideas from abstract expressionism, 90s dance music, rave culture, graffiti, and his mother’s South Asian and West African textiles. His vibrant, hybrid approach blends rhythm and texture, using oil stick techniques that echo embroidery.

Developed following a joint residency with Pallant House Gallery and West Dean College, this show offers a bold, contemporary response to British landscape painting.

This exhibition showcases Pallant House Gallery’s internationally significant Pop Art collection through the lens of the body.

In the 1950s and 1960s there was a radical return to figuration in art, inspired by an increased fascination with popular culture and mass-produced images.

Pop and the Figure brings together works by artists including Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Jann Haworth, and Colin Self whose approach to the figure encapsulated the spirit of an era through themes such as celebrity, social liberation, the threat of nuclear war, and the seductive imagery of advertising.

This monumental installation, No.1367 Mesh, crafted specifically for our historic staircase, features Begum’s iconic colourful mesh clusters (often referred to as ‘clouds’). Each unique configuration brings vibrant colour and organic forms to the 18th-century townhouse, blending history and contemporary art. The gridded material spills over the landing balcony and through the middle of the staircase, allowing visitors to experience the artwork from multiple angles.

This exhibition brings together paintings, drawings and prints created by Community Programme members in response to a shared connection to the landscape. Selected and arranged by artist Haroun Hayward, whose exhibition Path through Trees is on display in the adjoining rooms, the collective work reflects the collaborative spirit of the Community Programme while celebrating individual perspectives, creative practices and varied interpretations of the world around us.
