Gain work experience with our Public Programmes team.
Discover what a career in the arts could look like for you.
Gain work experience with our Public Programmes team with our work-based learning opportunities.
The Public Programmes team are responsible for bringing Pallant House Gallery’s collection and exhibitions alive through delivering activities (programmes) for all ages and making sure the Gallery is an accessible place for everyone.
Our programmes break down into three main categories:
- Community (local adults with support needs)
- Adults and Schools
In other museums or arts organisations this team is sometimes called the Learning or Education team.
Our Work Experience Programme aims to offer a varied work-based learning opportunity to support career development and give insight into working in the arts sector to people from all backgrounds. Your time with us could be anything from a week to six weeks, but always involves some on-the-ground event support and some behind-the-scenes administrative work, to give you a taste of how Public Programmes are run.
We hope that you will finish your work experience with us feeling as though you’ve had a realistic insight into how one part of a museum art gallery works, and have a better idea of how all teams work together. We hope it will demystify the museum world for you and is valuable in helping you work out what career you might like to pursue.
Working in Public Programmes was brilliant for my confidence and leadership skills, and organising a summer workshop really tested my organisation and time management. I would recommend work experience at Pallant House Gallery to anyone interested: you’ll meet wonderful people, gain a real appreciation for the goings-on inside a gallery and maybe even discover a career path that was totally unexpected.
Public Programmes Work Experience Participant
Who can apply?
We want to offer these opportunities to people who would benefit most from work experience with us in terms of furthering their personal and professional development.
This can range from people who are looking for their next career path to university students.
Previous experience of working in a museum or gallery is not a requirement to undertake work experience here, neither is having any particular qualifications or degrees.
However, we can only offer work experience to people over the age of 18. If you are between the ages of 14-17 and are interested in learning more about creative careers, you can apply to join our Young Gallery Assistant Summer Programme.
This role will suit people who…
Have an enthusiastic and friendly manner, enjoy working with children and young people, and have an interest in pursuing a career in the museum, arts or learning sector.
What does it entail?
Depending on the time of year, work experience at the Gallery usually involves assisting staff in our Public Programmes team to deliver certain events and activities. This could be free Open Weekends, school holiday activities, Summer Lates and talks and courses for adults. It involves helping both with the delivery of the event themselves – interacting with the visitors and facilitators – as well as administration tasks in the office to make sure everything is planned properly.
We usually require individuals to commit to working with us at the Gallery from approximately 10am to 4pm every weekday including some weekends, depending on what events are happening and when. Work experience can last from one to six weeks depending on the time of year and how much time you can commit. We are happy to be flexible within this but also want you to get the most out of your time with us, especially if it’s just a week!
Out-of-pocket travel costs between home and the gallery will be paid up to £20 per day, on the production of a valid receipt.
Other benefits of doing work experience with us
- Free entry to Pallant House Gallery and some Gallery events during your time with us (e.g. Thursday evening talks, art course sessions)
- Use of the Art Reference Library
- 20% discount in Pallant Café and Restaurant
- 10% discount on Gallery Publications
- Free Gallery Magazine
- If required, a discussion with relevant Gallery staff member about your career, including looking at your CV, and work Experience References
