This will be a total of 38 hours of work experience, which includes:

A couple stand looking at a selection of artworks hanging against a yellow wall.

Gallery Assistant induction session

[Sunday 19 July 2020 – 12pm-2pm, 2 hours)

Leo Powell, Pallant House Gallery’s Volunteer Supervisor, will go through the steps to be a Gallery Assistant, including: how to make visitors feel welcome, safeguarding our artwork, and emergency protocol/health and safety.

Learning Coordinator Holly Riddle will then take you around the gallery with a ‘Discuss and Do’ session to better understand the collection, helping promote a more analytical approach to the artworks.

Volunteering as a Gallery Assistant

[6 Sessions from 21 July – 30 August – 3 hours, totalling 18 hours)

As part of being a Gallery Assistant you will be relied on to help the Welcome Desk staff by being present in the gallery spaces. You will be interacting with the public by helping them find their way around the gallery, while reporting anything relevant to the Welcome Desk via a radio handset. You will be given a set time and day that you will be trusted to follow through with throughout your summer here.

Sunday Studio Sessions

[6 Sessions every Sunday – 3 hours, totaling 18 hours, 11am-2pm)

Alongside your three-hour volunteering sessions you will have access to the studio every Sunday in the summer. It is a chance to meet and develop your creative ideas with other members of the Young Gallery Assistants. You will be set tasks such as conducting audience development surveys, researching an artwork on display, and presenting your findings to your fellow Gallery Assistants. This could take the form of a gallery tour, a Pecha Kucha, or even a short magazine – whatever works for you.
