In 1943 Walter Hussey, then vicar of St Matthew's church in Northampton, commissioned a landmark work in 20th century religious art, the Madonna and Child by Henry Moore.

This talk explores the commission and its reception – and its significance in the development of Hussey’s patronage, the results of which can be seen in Chichester cathedral and in the Gallery’s collections.

Dr Peter Webster is an historian of contemporary British Christianity, with a particular interest in the religious arts, and author of Church and Patronage in 20th Century Britain: Walter Hussey and the Arts, published by Palgrave Macmillan.
