Reopening the Gallery

Booking is now open

The safety of our visitors, and staff and volunteers is our first priority and we have planned carefully to ensure we are safe to reopen. We have tried to make any changes as unobtrusive as possible so that you are able to enjoy our art as you have done previously but of course, you will notice some differences.

Here is what you can expect:

  • We will be limiting the number of visitors in the Gallery at one time so you will need to book a time slot for your visit in advance. You can book online or by calling 01243 774557.
  • A one-way route through the Gallery – you can download a copy of this route prior to your arrival by clicking here or on our Your Visit page.
  • Social distancing guidance signposted throughout the Gallery.
  • Our Front of House staff will be provided with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • You will find foot-operated hand sanitising stations around the Gallery and we will regularly clean frequently-touched surfaces.
  • Our new opening hours will be 10am-4pm (last timed entry will be at 3pm).
  • Our events programme will be going online – sign up to our eBulletins for updates.
  • Group bookings and tours are unavailable for the time being, until government advice changes.
  • You can enjoy a menu of light bites from our Café which has moved to allow for social distancing.

How you can help:

  • It is now mandatory under UK law for everyone to wear face coverings in all museums and galleries. Please note there are some exceptions for health reasons, including hidden disabilities.
  • Please be aware of social distancing and the one way system as you make your way through the Gallery.
  • Make use of the hand-sanitising stations and wash your hands.
  • Reschedule your visit if you feel unwell.
  • Follow the guidance of our staff and Gallery stewards.

As per Government guidance people should not leave their homes and visit the gallery if any of the following conditions apply:

  • They are displaying any symptoms of coronavirus (a high temperature, a continuous cough or a loss of sense of smell or taste).
  • They are waiting for the result of a coronavirus test.
  • Tested positive for coronavirus within last 14 days.
  • They live with someone who has symptoms, is waiting for a test result or has tested positive in the last 14 days.
  • Someone in their support bubble has symptoms, is waiting for a test result or has tested positive in the last 14 days.

What are your opening times?

We will be open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm and Sundays/Bank Holidays, 11am – 4pm. Please note the last timed entry will be at 3pm.

 

How will you manage social distancing?

We are limiting the number of people who can enter the Gallery at one time and have implemented a one-way system through the Gallery, with social distancing guidance clearly signposted.

 

Will I need to pre-book?

In order for us to safely manage visitor numbers, we ask that you pre-book a time-slot for your visit. The time-slots are in 15 minute intervals, with the final time-slot at 3pm.

How long can I stay? 

We have worked out our time-slots based on a typical visit time of two hours. Please feel free to stay as long as you like, however if after your two hour slot the Gallery seems busy, we ask you to consider making way for incoming visitors.

 

Will I need to wear a face covering?

From 8 August it is mandatory under UK law for everyone to wear face coverings in all museums and galleries. Please note there are some exceptions for health reasons, including hidden disabilities. Please help us adhere to these guidelines and ensure the safety of everyone in the Gallery by wearing a face covering. You may remove the covering if you are visiting the Café.

 

Will there be toilets available?

Yes, our toilets will be open for visitors, including our accessible toilets (left- and right-hand transference). They will be regularly disinfected – please be patient with us while we are performing these essential operations. If you need to use the left-hand transference accessible toilet, please ask for the key at the Welcome Desk.

 

Will there be baby changing facilities?

A baby-changing table is located in the accessible toilet at the end of the corridor. Nappy bins are provided. This will also be regularly disinfected.

 

Will there be cloakroom or locker facilities?

Unfortunately, we cannot currently offer these facilities. Large bags will not be permitted in the gallery spaces.

 

Can I use the lift?

The lift can be used and is prioritised for people who are not able to use the stairs. We request that a maximum of two different households use the lift at one time. Please be patient if you need to wait to use it.

 

What can I see when I visit?

Your admission ticket covers all of our temporary exhibitions and permanent collection displays. Our spring exhibitions Barnett Freedman: Designs for Modern Britain, Drawn to Nature: Gilbert White and the Artists, An Outbreak of Talent: Bawden, Marx, Ravilious and their Contemporaries and A Life in Art: The Muriel Wilson Bequest will all be open. We are also working on a new rehang of our permanent collection.

I am unable or don’t want to use public transport, what parking or bike rack facilities are there?

The Gallery is located in the centre of Chichester and is easily accessed by walking or biking. There are bike racks directly outside the Gallery’s entrance and plenty more on East Street, about 100 metres away.

There are ten car parks in and around central Chichester. The nearest car parks are the South Pallant car park, East Pallant car park and Baffins Lane car park. All are a few minutes’ walk from the Gallery.

There is a dropping off bay directly outside the Gallery and three disabled parking bays in North Pallant.

Can I pay using cash? 

We encourage visitors to pre-book their tickets and pay by card via the website or by telephone. 

 

Can I come as part of a group?

Unfortunately, all group bookings are temporarily suspended, including school, college and university groups. You may visit with other members of your household.

 

Can I bring young children?

Children are welcome to the Gallery but must be accompanied by a parent of a guardian.

 

Will Pallant Restaurant and Café be open?

There is a café service in the restaurant area and courtyard with seating arranged to comply with social distancing guidelines.

Is the bookshop open?

The bookshop is open and is following all government guidelines, including social distancing and limiting customer numbers when necessary to ensure a safe shopping experience.

Will the library be open?

Unfortunately the Art Library and Archive are currently closed but we are working towards reopening.  Please check our website for updates in advance of your visit.

 

How far in advance can I book my ticket? 

We will be releasing timed-slots on a rolling basis, so you can book up to four weeks in advance.

 

Where can I enter the Gallery?

You can enter the Gallery from our main entrance on North Pallant. Please note that our side entrance on East Pallant is currently closed.

 

Will large print labels be available?

To help prevent the spread of coronavirus, we have removed hard copy versions of our labels from the gallery spaces. You can instead download our large print labels in advance of your visit. Save them to your mobile device to read during your visit, or if you prefer, print them out in a font that’s easy for you to read.

 

Can I refill my water bottle?

Yes, there is a water cooler to the right of the Welcome Desk where you can refill your water bottle. We will not be providing paper cups at this time.

 

Can I get a refund for my ticket if there is another lockdown?

In the event of the Gallery needing to close for a limited period to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, all customers who have booked admission tickets during that time will be contacted and offered either a refund or a credit note to redeem when we open again.

How do I book my ticket?

If you do not already have an account with us, you will be prompted to create one.

 

Can I book by telephone?

Yes, you book over the telephone by calling 01243 774557 between 10am-4pm.

 

Can I reschedule or change my booking slot if I change my mind?

You can amend your booking by calling the Welcome Desk on 01243 774557 or email info@pallant.org.uk. Please quote your order number so we can quickly locate your booking.

Please also kindly let us know if you need to cancel your booking or are not going to make it so that we can release your time-slot for someone else. We will add the credit to your account, so that you may use it for a visit at a later date. We do not issue refunds unless there is a waiting list and we can re-sell your ticket for your time-slot.

 

What happens if I miss my booking slot?

If you are delayed or miss your booking slot, we will do our best to let you in during the next free time-slot. However, please note that if the next time-slot is full, you will have to wait outside the Gallery for the next free space. If you know you are going to be delayed, please call us on 01243 774557 to let us know.

I’m a Friend – do I still need to pre-book my visit?

Yes, we are asking all our visitors to pre-book their admission tickets so we can safely manage the numbers of people within the Gallery. You will not be charged for admission. When you book, just select the Friends ticket option. Please bring your Friends card when you visit.

I’m a Friend but have never booked online – how do I go about booking?

To create on online account with us, all you need is an email address. If you receive our ebulletins, your email address will be on our system. To activate your account, visit our Log in page and click on “Forgotten your password? Reset here”. Follow the instructions to create a password.

Please note that you will need to have third party cookies enabled to log in. For more information on creating or changing a password, please visit our password help page.

I bought or renewed my membership online but haven’t yet received my card – can I still get my Friends free entry?

If you haven’t yet received your Friends card, please tell our Front of House staff when you arrive, as we are holding them at the Welcome Desk.

Gallery Hire

Can I hire the Gallery for my event?

Gallery hire is suspended for the time being in line with government guidelines regarding mass events. We will follow official advice regarding when we can take bookings again.
