This tour will explore how artists have used the still life as a means of expression and experimentation. The tour will include historic still life paintings, and consider the symbolism and significance of particular objects, ‘memento mori’ and the way still life has been used as a vehicle for artistic innovation in the twentieth century: a subject for Cubists such as André Derain and Henri Hayden, Surrealists such as Paul Nash, abstract artists such as Fernand Léger and Ben Nicholson, and Pop artists such as Patrick Caulfield and the contemporary artist Julian Opie.
