Following the success of its first national outing earlier this year, Pallant House Gallery’s ground-breaking project Outside In will spread across the country over the next few months in a series of regional exhibitions hosted by partner organisations throughout the UK.
The regional exhibitions will be taking place in a whole host of different museums and galleries across the country until 15 December 2013; spreading geographically from Hastings Museum and Art Gallery in the South East and The Museum of Somerset in the South West right up to Perth Museum and Art Gallery in Scotland - and everywhere in between. In the North West, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery are celebrating Outside In: North West with a ‘Meet the Artists' event on 4 April, with the exhibition continuing until 23 June 2013. Running parallel to this, the Woodhorn Museum will be accommodating Outside In: North East until 30 June 2013, which will be accompanied by a display of work by an Outside In artist providing reinterpretations of several works from Woodhorn's Ashington Group collection. Outside In: Central - featuring work by sixteen artists selected by a panel from over 300 entries across eight counties in the central region - will be hosted by Compton Verney until 15 December 2013. Six of the selected artists have also been invited to choose a piece from Compton Verney's important British Folk Art Collection to be displayed alongside their work, opening up the Folk Art Collection to new interpretation and highlighting the Collection's testimony to the extraordinary creative talents of largely unknown and untrained individuals. Michael George, a photo-realistic painter from Redditch, has chosen Alfred Wallis's Schooner Approaching Harbour (c. 1930), because of its "raw disregard for perspective and scale." Outside In: South East, at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery from 20 July - 13 October 2013, will be the second time Outside In artists have exhibited at the Gallery - the first being back in 2010. This second Outside In instalment in Hastings will be split into two sections; one featuring the inspirational creativity of Outside In artists working in the South East, and the other highlighting the talent of renowned ‘Outsider Artist' Scottie Wilson. Susan Ward, Curator of Outside In: South East, spoke of this juxtaposing of Wilson, admired by Jean Dubuffet and Pablo Picasso, and the Outside In artists: "this small eclectic selection of Wilson's work will provide the perfect context and backdrop for the dynamic and powerful pieces of the current contemporary Outside In artists." Outside In: Scotland will cover two venues; Perth Museum and Art Gallery, Perth (30 August - 26 October 2013) and Project Ability in Glasgow (3 October - 18 November 2013), with Perth Museum and Art Gallery showcasing works by renowned Art Brut artist Angus McPhee simultaneously. In the West, Outside In will visit The Museum of Somerset in Taunton (7 July - September 2013), and the project will also visit MK Project Space Gallery in Milton Keynes from 6 - 29 September 2013.
