Picture This is a schools learning initiative which uses a selected project painting from Pallant House Gallery’s Collection to inspire a range of cross curricular activities within the gallery and the classroom. The key project aims are to broker new partnerships, establish a long term local schools network and foster both confidence and understanding of our Collection, while presenting its ability to act as a learning tool and resource.
In 2013 the project (pilot) Picture This started with one partnership school St Anthony's. Based on a range of shared and individual aims the project allowed both staff and pupils to access the Gallery's Collection and respond creatively. In 2014 St Anthony's school invited a second partner - Jessie Younghusband School - and this partnership has now continued. At the start of this year's project both schools identified a new 2015 aim, a wish to place a stronger emphasis on collaboration between their own pupils and the two schools.
At the start of each project year Pallant House Gallery works with both the teaching staff and pupils from the partnership schools. All teaching staff are invited to attend a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) event and every class (pupils) then visit the gallery, to view the selected project painting and to learn about the painting's historical story and themes. Back in the classroom the schools are encouraged to produce a range of work that shows their own creative response, in all subject areas, including Art, Music, Dance, English, Maths and History.
