This display in the Garden Gallery marks the tenth anniversary of Pallant House Gallery’s flagship project, Outside In, which supports artists who see themselves as facing barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance or isolation.
The project has grown considerably since 2007, when it held its first open submission exhibition of work by local artists at Pallant House Gallery. In 2009, the project expanded to include artists based in the south of England, and in 2012 the project went national, receiving over 2,300 submissions from national and international artists for its third exhibition at Pallant House Gallery. Since then, regional exhibitions and events, as well as a touring show, have been held across the country.
Over the past ten years, the project has supported 2,100 artists who all have a gallery on the Outside In website. In more recent years, the project has been able to offer an increasingly international platform for the artists it supports, having taken part in the 2014 and 2015 Paris Outsider Art Fairs.
