Friends of Chartres and Pallant House Gallery collaborate for the fourth time with the return of the School Arts Competition. This time, the competition will be inspired by the beautiful tapestries designed by John Piper and woven by Pinton Freres at Felletin, near Orbeton in France for Chichester Cathedral and the strong tradition of tapestry and stitch work in France, including the Bayeux Tapestry and the Lion and the Unicorn tapestries at the Musee Cluny in Paris.

Pallant House Gallery is extremely fortunate to have most of the preparatory work for the tapestry including a tester panel woven by Pinton Freres for the St Luke panel. The tapestry is rich in symbolism, portraying the animals that represent the four evangelists and the four associated elements.

The exhibition will showcase a broad and imaginative interpretation of the themes, materials and processes.
