Life Painting based on Keith Vaughan (Adult Workshops)

Sunday 1st April, 1:00pm – 4pm

Composite nude figure pieces or assemblies form a small but important part of Vaughan's work. This workshop will begin with quick drawings from the male nude, which will be used to inform an assembly painting, referring to the style and techniques of the artist. Please bring cartridge or low key coloured Ingres paper, charcoal, pastels or graphite, white chalk, Indian Ink, support for painting (primed card, hardboard sealed with rabbits foot glue or a prepared canvas). A range of paints including low key colours and white, hog hair or square ended brushes.

Gerard Hastings on Keith Vaughan's Journals (Talk)

Keith Vaughan's journals which he kept throughout his life have become as celebrated as his artwork. First published in 1966 they offer, in the words of his publisher Alan Ross, 'a self portrait of astonishing honesty: devoid of disguise in any shape or form, or hypocrisy.' Gerard Hastings, author of a new book on Vaughan's final moving journal, explores one of the greatest pieces of confessional writing of the twentieth-century.

Abstracting the Landscape (Adult Workshop)

Sunday 22nd April, 1:00pm – 4pm

Taking ideas from the shapes, designs and the colours of the Sussex landscape found in the work of Keith Vaughan you will create your own abstracted composition based on an image of a landscape of your choice. Please bring images of landscapes, any water-based paints plus a surface of your choice.

Robin Child: Keith Vaughan and the Dynamic of Brokenness (Talk)

Thursday 3rd May, 6:00pm

Born in the nearby Sussex village of Selsey, Vaughan was one of the most significant artists of his generation, best-known for his painterly depictions of the male nude in the landscape. Robin Child considers Vaughan's work in relation to the classical tradition and his remarkable artistic technique using gouache and oil paint.

Figure and Space (Adult Workshop)

Sunday 13th May, 1:00pm – 4pm

Working from poses by a life model, create a composition in which human figures are set within an imaginary space. Basing your ideas on Keith Vaughan, look at positive and negative shapes relating to the body and explore ways in which the human form can dominate or be absorbed into its surroundings. Please bring a selection from the following list: White cartridge or neutral coloured drawing paper; pastels, charcoal, conté or graphite sticks, white chalk; black and coloured ink; water-based painting materials (e.g. acrylic or gouache) to include a range of earth colours – e.g. yellow ochre, burnt and raw umber; a range of brushes suited to your chosen painting medium.
