Festival of Britain 1951

Inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Festival of Britain followed the austerity of the war years when much of the country still lay in ruins. Described as 'a tonic to the nation', it was intended as an attempt to give Britons a feeling of recovery and progress and to promote better-quality design in the rebuilding of British towns and cities.
