The Mexico of Surreal Friends

The Mexican government under La┼║arco Cárdenas, arguably the most distinguished President of Mexico in the 20th Century (1934-1940), opened the borders to the refugees of the Spanish Republic and the political and intellectual refugees of the Second World War. This decision was driven by international solidarity, but would enrich Mexico immensely in the years after.

Remedios Varo, Benjamin Peret and José and Kati Horna were among the many refugees who settled in Mexico in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
