Charles Kearley, a property developer, had a budget of £700 a year to build his collection. With advice from art critic R H Wilenski, he bought works by Modern British and continental artists such as Paul Cézanne and Gino Severini. His collection was gifted to the Gallery through The Art Fund in 1989.
